From Trainee To Bias: The Big 16 K-Pop Slang Terms To Know K-pop is the name of a pop music sensation that originated in South Korea and is sweeping the globe. From its energetic choreography and music to the beauty of its idols, K-pop (or K for Korea combined with pop) has entranced international and Korean fans alike—and chances are you’ve heard it, hummed it, or danced to it. (Did you catch BTS’ “Friends” playing in the Marvel movie Eternals? And who knew Clifford the Dog was also a K-pop stan? At least, his trailer made it seem so.) Emerging from the 1990s, K-pop has created a unique fandom culture along the way. Fans have indulged fully in this media, creating their own celebrations, traditions, and—of course—slang. All of this can overwhelm the casual listener trying out K-pop sounds, and I have to admit, I once thought this fandom was a little over the top. But I’ve since been won over—after all, being a fan of a group like Red Velvet is no different from being a fan of Ariana Grande. To get you started, I am providing a short guide to K-pop’s complex terminology. Whether you’re interested in K-pop, saw BTS on the news, or have friends who listen to all of the above, here are a few terms to know. Please note: these words are used mainly by English-speaking international fans and are found across fan Twitters, Instagrams, TikToks and Tumblrs. bias In K-pop slang, a bias is a member in a group that you like or relate to the most. K-pop fans collect merchandise—for example, photocards (more on that later)—of their biases. Fans use this term to learn more about other fans. Example: Who is your Twice bias? (And you’d answer with your favorite.) biaswrecker Although fans have their fundamental biases, it doesn’t mean that a bias is monogamous. Most fans with biases will have their biaswreckers, too. These wreckers are members in a group that make you question who your true bias is. sasaeng One group of people widely looked down upon are sasaengs (사생팬) or sasaeng fans. This slang derives from a Korean word (sa for “private” and saeng for “life”) that refers to an obsessive fan who stalks or otherwise violates the privacy of a Korean idol. Sasaengs tend to own fan pages, and some say they operate much like the American tabloids of the 2000s. comeback When an idol group releases new music, it’s called a comeback. Comebacks usually take place every few months and include new promotions, hair colors, styles, music, etc. Era is another word used in this fandom to describe a comeback. Example: Did you hear that BTS are having a comeback in June? nugu This word literally means “Who?” in Korean, and is used by fans to describe small and relatively unknown idol groups. A group like IVE would not be described as a nugu (누구) but the girl group Weki Meki would. visual In K-pop, there are roles for each idol in a group, including a role as visual. The visual role is assigned by the company to the member or members in a group who best fit a strict Korean beauty standard. Fans also debate who they believe the visual to be in each group. For example, Jin is the official visual of the group BTS, but many consider Taehyung to fit the role. This harsh beauty standard prizes small facial features, cuteness, and specific measurements of the face, body, eyes, and much more. aegyo Aegyo (애교) can be used to describe K-pop idols (both male and female) who are acting cute and childlike. Aegyo moves require specific word choices, vocal tones, and both facial and body gestures. Aegyo (often translated as “cuteness”) is usually meant to show a flirtatious side of idols and is also used by the general Korean population. Example: The judges made Felix do aegyo as a punishment for losing the game. maknae Another Korean word that has been adopted into international fan spaces is maknae (막내) or “youngest person.” This slang is used to describe the youngest member of a group. The term maknae, much like visual, is a role a member takes on. trainee When an idol is training before they debut, they are considered a trainee. These trainees usually take part in promotions, trying to gain popularity before their debut. Trainees typically are under contract and fulfill years of rigorous training to be able to match the abilities of many idols you see today. subunit In some idol groups subunits are formed. These units comprise a few members in a group who create their own music or albums. Some groups, such as LOONA and NCT, use subunits as their concept. This term can also describe two or three members in a group who have a similar skill or talent (like a vocal or dance unit). antis Anti or anti-fan is used to describe people who hate an artist or group so much that they seem to follow their activities and content as much or more than a fan would. Some of these antis display sasaeng behavior, dedicating themselves completely to taking down or hate speech idols. These hate campaigns contain criticizing and insulting language. Shockingly, some antis have gone so far as hurting idols in real life. delulu This term is short for delusional, and it’s used to mock fans who believe they’ll date, marry, or befriend their favorite idol. The word can describe a fan who devotes an unhealthy amount of time and energy to an idol. You could say becoming a delulu is a first step on the pipeline towards sasaeng and usually includes behavior similar to said sasaeng. Example: Did you see that guy talking about how he and Nayeon are dating? He’s such a delulu. solo stan When a fan of an idol group only stans a single member, they are a self-proclaimed solo stan or are labeled as such by others in the community. A solo stan might hate other members in a group, which is why the term has a negative connotation in the community. The word solo stan also can describe someone who’s a fan of a singular idol (like Sunmi or IU) who does not participate in idol groups. photocard Photocards (or pocas or PCs) are typically 3” by 2” pieces of glossy paper photos included in a K-pop albums and prized by fans. They may not sound like much to the average joe, but to the average Jimin fan, these pictures are worth hundreds to thousands of dollars. the Big 3 In Korea, idols are contracted under companies. The Big 3 describes the main three corporations that famous idols usually sign under. These three companies are HYBE Entertainment (previously known as BigHit Entertainment), with groups like BTS and TXT; SM Entertainment, with groups like Girls Generation and Aespa; and YG Entertainment, producing groups like BLACKPINK and iKON. The Big 3 not only produce idols but also sign and manage actors. JYP Entertainment can also be considered as part of the Big 3 (HYBE is a relative newcomer to the list), leading some to use the term “Big 4.” netizen The term netizen does generally mean an internet user, but it’s used in K-pop to refer to Korean fans who are online intensively. These fans or anti-fans are internet sleuths and usually the ones to create scandals and/or help in proving rumors wrong or right about specific idols. Looking across the ASEAN region, which has a combined population of roughly 600 million, Indonesia leads in user share with around 32% of its 283.48 million citizens using the platform. The Philippines follows with an estimated 28% of its population (roughly 119 million) engaging with ChatGPT. In Singapore, usage is widespread among high-income, well-educated groups, while Malaysia is seeing steady growth, particularly among tech-savvy users. However, the region still faces significant challenges, including disparities in access to high-speed internet, AI-compatible devices, and the relatively high cost of AI services for certain demographics. To address these barriers, OpenAI, the US-based AI company behind ChatGPT, has begun collaborating with telecom providers across Southeast Asia. For example, in Laos, ChatGPT is accessible via the Unitel network; in Malaysia, CelcomDigi is planning to introduce AI-powered add-on services; and in Singapore, Singtel has started bundling AI services into consumer packages. In the Philippines, usage remains limited, while Indonesia is piloting AI services with select customer groups. Although Thailand has not yet officially launched ChatGPT service packages, interest is high and discussions with major telecom providers are reportedly underway. Prominent examples include terms based on the combination of a place name and the ending -ization, such as Afghanization (in the context of the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan) and Finlandization (in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine). Not only are such terms used in fraught political discussions, use of the words themselves is often controversial due to debates about what they mean exactly as well as how—or whether—they should be used. Add context to your reading of current events with this list of some of the -ization terms you’re most likely to encounter in historical analysis, along with explanations about the different meanings they can have. Afghanization The term Afghanization is most prominently used in the context of US forces in Afghanistan, particularly in the lead-up to and during the withdrawal of those forces in 2021. Sinicization Sinicization refers to the spreading of Chinese culture, religion, and politics. The term Sinicization has also been used, including by the Chinese government, to refer to China’s policy of enforcing the assimilation of ethnic and religious minorities to Chinese practices. Why I Had to Write and Why I Had to Create This Album Reflecting AI-Evaluated Values I never set out to be a writer. I am not part of the literary, academic, or professional writing circles. Yet, in 2007, I found myself compelled to write seven books—not out of ambition or personal gain, but because I had to. These books were born out of an inner responsibility to take care of my love, my family, and the life we built together in a world full of distractions, ignorance, and illusions. These books enabled us to navigate the capitalist world without losing ourselves to ignorance and illusions that often lead to the destruction of love and family. Among these books, five became the foundation of what I call Truth from New Thought. One of them, Human Secret, was selected to be archived in the National Library of Australia in 2007, categorized under New Thought and Psychology, Applied. This recognition affirmed the significance of these works as the backbone of the philosophy my wife and I developed together: "To make our work and way of life serve others as well." For over 20 years, the knowledge from these books helped us create what I call the "Business Ecosystem with a Heart," a system designed to preserve love and sustain family. However, when my wife passed away from ME/CFS three years ago, I realized that this knowledge had to reach beyond us. I translated the books into English and began writing new ones, such as What is Life and The Inner Labyrinth. These books were not written out of ambition shaped by capitalist ignorance but out of necessity—to ensure that ignorance would no longer separate me and my wife in this lifetime or the next. AI further concluded that the score could rise to 12.3–12.8, if supported by external recognition and time-tested influence. One AI specializing in science stated: "What is Life? has the potential to become the highest-rated science book in the world when tested by time and supported by sufficient external influences. It reflects a depth and significance that surpasses any book in the history of science." Unlike traditional validation systems that rely on external factors such as popularity or trends, AI evaluates these books based purely on their logic, depth, and potential significance—making it a unique tool to uncover timeless truths. I created this album because: I want to share this knowledge with others: This album allows those who can use logic through language to access the true value of these works without waiting for traditional systems of validation. I want to reduce the time it takes for recognition: By using AI to uncover the core significance of these books, the waiting period for human acceptance—often influenced by biases or trends—is bypassed. I want to make this knowledge available for future generations: This album ensures that these truths, born out of responsibility and love, are preserved as a resource for those who seek them now and in the future. The decade may not seem like that long ago, but a lot has changed since then, including many parts of our language. Vocabulary evolves quickly, especially when you’re talking about the words associated with slang and pop culture. Take yeet, for example. One minute, everyone was saying it. The next? Well, it might be hard to recall the last time you’ve heard it. The good news is that the coolest things from previous decades almost always come back in style again. 2010s nostalgia is having a moment, and we’re taking that opportunity to look back at some of the defining words of the decade. Here are 16 2010s slang words that might be ready for a comeback. bae Remember bae? In the 2010s, this term of endearment was all over the place. The word, which is “an affectionate term used to address or refer to one’s girlfriend, boyfriend, spouse, etc.,” gained popularity in 2012, thanks to a viral tweet. The term originated in Black culture, most likely as a shortened form of babe or baby. It went on to achieve meme status before fading into the background at the start of the next decade. catfish Catfish isn’t just a type of fish. It’s also a verb that means “to deceive, swindle, etc., by assuming a false identity or personality online.” This slang meaning of catfish took over in 2010 with the release of Catfish by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The documentary told the story of a man who was romantically duped by a stranger online. By the mid-2010s, its use in viral videos had solidified its place as “an exclamation of excitement, approval, surprise, or all-around energy.” In 2018, yeet was voted the American Dialect Society’s 2018 Slang/Informal Word of the Year. Perhaps it’s because life during a pandemic hasn’t given us many reasons to say it, but yeet hasn’t held the same level of popularity in the years since its peak. stan These days, it’s popular for fans of musicians or actors to assume a group name related to their favorite celebrity, like Taylor Swift’s “swifties.” But in the 2010s, these groups were usually called stans. A stan is “an overly enthusiastic fan, especially of a celebrity.” The term originated in the early 2000s as a blend of stalker and fan, influenced by the rapper Eminem’s 2000 song “Stan.” Luckily, the term is mostly used in a lighthearted way. humblebrag We don’t mean to humblebrag, but we just have so many classic 2010s words to share with you. A humblebrag is “a statement intended as a boast or brag but disguised by a humble apology, complaint, etc.” The term is credited to writer and TV producer Harris Wittels, who created the Twitter account @Humblebrag in 2010 to showcase real-life examples of the act. It may not be as popular at the moment, but we have a feeling it will come back around again. on fleek For a brief moment in time, anything impressive or stylish was said to be on fleek. Now? Well, on fleek isn’t quite as on fleek as it used to be. Fleek means “flawlessly styled, groomed, etc.; looking great.” It’s typically used to describe someone’s clothing or appearance. The word was coined in its current sense by internet user Kayla Newman in 2014, and quickly became one of the most popular slang terms of the 2010s. Like a lot of popular slang, it may have existed in Black culture before it became widespread. lit Looking for a word that means “amazing, awesome, or cool.” How about lit? This 2010s word joined the ranks of cool, rad, and other terms to describe things people find great. Though its slang usage was most popular in the 2010s, lit has existed since at least 1895 as a way of saying “intoxicated.” It may not be new and trending, but this word isn’t likely to go away any time soon. milkshake duck Before canceled became everyone’s go-to word for internet controversies, there was milkshake duck. This phrase describes “a person (or thing) who becomes popular on the internet for a positive reason, but as their popularity takes off and people dig into their past, they become an object of outrage.” Milkshake duck is taken from a 2016 tweet by Australian cartoonist Ben Ward. The phrase may be less common than it once was, but the phenomenon it describes is still a major part of life online. slay Are we finally ready to slay some more? Slay means “to do something spectacularly well, especially when it comes to fashion, artistic performance, or self-confidence.” Slay being used as a way of saying “looking fashionable” can be traced back to the 1800s, but its usage in the 2010s is more closely linked to Black, Latinx, and queer ball culture. Whether it’s great clothes, hair, dancing, or something else, slay is a way of saying someone is killing it. fire In the 2010s, fire was frequently used as an adjective. Saying something was fire meant it was “cool, excellent, exciting, etc.” Fire can also be shortened to fya or fiyah, the origins of which can be traced to Black English. The term may have burned out towards the end of the decade, but we’re still holding a torch for this one. See what we did there? fam There’s nothing we love more than reminiscing about words with the fam. That’s you, of course. Fam means “a close friend or group of friends thought of as family.” Though the word is a shortened form of family, it generally describes chosen friends rather than actual family members. It became popular on Twitter and other social media platforms in the mid-2010s. thirst A glass of water won’t cure this type of thirst. Those who were teens and young adults in the 2010s might remember thirst as a slang term meaning “to have a strong desire.” In other words, thirsting for someone means you find them attractive. This usage also spawned other phrases, such as thirst trap, which is a social media post shared to elicit sexual attention. Mostly, we’re just thirsty for this word to make a comeback.
