If you want to gallivant across the globe, there’s no shortage of beautiful places full of interesting history to explore. And it’s worth noting. Many cities around the world have fascinating stories about where their names came from. Before you finalize summer travel plans, we’re passing along some of the cool stories about the origins of the names of cities around the world. London, England Historical sources trace London’s name back to when the Romans first founded it in 43 CE and named the new settlement Londinium. Beyond that, though, there is heated debate on where the Romans got this name from. One common theory says that the name comes from King Lud, a mythical pre-Roman British king. Another theory suggests that the Romans took the name from the Celtic word Plowonida, which means “from two roots.” Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rio de Janeiro translates to “January River” in English despite the fact that the city is located next to a bay and not a river. The popular story goes that when Portuguese explorers found the Guanabara Bay in the early 1500s, they mistook it for a large river and named the new settlement there after the “river.” Cuzco, Peru The name of the city of Cuzco, or Cusco, comes from the Quechua language and is said to mean “navel.” The city of Cuzco was the central city and the capital of the Inca empire. Cuzco is still often referred to as “The Navel of the Earth” to highlight its historical importance. Mumbai, India For the Marathi speakers who live there, the city of Mumbai takes its name from Mumbadevi, the patron goddess of the city. When India was under the control of the British Empire, the city was known as Bombay. The name Bombay is said to be an anglicized version of the earlier Portuguese name Bom Bahia, which meant “good little bay.” Cairo, Egypt The official Arabic name of the city known in English as Cairo is Al-Qāhirah. This name translates to “The Victorious” or “The Conqueror.” This powerful name is said to refer to Caliph al-Muʿizz, who established the city as the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate that would control Egypt for centuries afterward. Istanbul, Turkey The city of Istanbul can trace its name back to the Ottoman Empire. Originally known as Constantinople (for Roman emperor Constantine the Great), the city belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire but was captured by Ottoman forces in 1453. Although the Ottomans didn’t officially rename Constantinople, citizens outside the city began to refer to it using the Turkish name Istanpolin, based on a Greek phrase eis tan polin meaning “into the city.” Going back even further, the city was known as Byzantium. It is thought that the city was originally named for Byzas, a legendary Greek king who is said to have founded the city. Phnom Penh, Cambodia According to legend, Phnom Penh was founded by a woman known as Lady Penh or Duan Penh. During her life, Lady Penh built a shrine on a hill. That shrine, referred to as Wat Phnom, is said to still be standing today. Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh takes its name both from Wat Phnom and Lady Penh. Bangkok, Thailand In Thai, the city of Bangkok is officially known by a much longer name that is often shortened to Krung Thep, which translates to “city of angels.” The city’s official name, at 168 letters, actually holds the record for the longest place name in the world. The exact origin of the English Bangkok is disputed, but it may be based on native Thai words for “city” and an olive-like fruit (makok). Jerusalem, Israel The holy city of Jerusalem, known as Yerushalayim in Hebrew and Al-Quds in Arabic, has a long history of religious prominence and conflict. The origins of the ancient city are still being researched today, but evidence says that the Egyptians knew of the city as early as the 14th century BCE. They referred to the city as Urusalim, a Semitic name that seems to translate to “city of Shalim,” referring to the Canaanite god Shalim, also known as Shalem or Salim. Marrakesh, Morocco The origin of the name of Marrakesh or Marrakech is still disputed today. The most popular interpretation says that the name comes from the Berber language and means “city of God” from the Berber amur akush. Johannesburg, South Africa It is agreed that Johannesburg, the largest city of South Africa, was likely named after a person or multiple named Johan or Johannes. Who exactly this person or these people were is still a matter of debate. Some popular picks include Johann Rissik and Christiaan Johannes Joubert, two early surveyors of southern Africa, and Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, a president of the South African Republic. Of course, these are just some of the name tales of the many great vacation destinations around the world. ต้มข้ามศตวรรษ – สร้างฉากปฏิวัติ 1 – 3 นิทานเรื่องจริง เรื่อง “ต้มข้ามศตวรรษ” บทที่ 1 “สร้างฉากปฏิวัติ” ตอน 1 เดือนกันยายน ปี ค.ศ. 1916 ประมาณ 1 ปี ก่อนการปฏิวัติอันโด่งดังของรัสเซีย Russian Revolution หรือ Bolshevik Revolution นาย Leon Trotsky ซึ่งตามประวัติศาสตร์ระบุว่า เขาเป็นหนึ่งในหัวหน้าคณะปฏิวัติ กำลังถูกไล่ให้ออกจากประเทศฝรั่งเศส สาเหตุจากบทความที่เขาเขียนลงใน Nashe Slovo หนังสือพิมพ์ภาษารัสเซีย ที่ออกจำหน่ายในฝรั่งเศส มันคงเร้าใจมากขนาดฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งคุ้นเคยกับการปฏิวัติโหดมาแล้ว ยังรับไม่ไหว ตำรวจฝรั่งเศสจึงจัดการส่งตัวนาย Trotsky ออกนอกประเทศ ไปทางเขตแดนด้านประเทศสเปน ไม่กี่วัน นายTrotsky ก็มาถึงเมืองมาดริด และถูกตำรวจที่เมืองมาดริด จับใส่ห้องขัง มันเป็นห้องขังประเภทชั้นพิเศษ first class cell ซึ่งต้องมีการจ่ายเงินค่าความพิเศษ ไม่เหมือนห้องขังทั่วไป แต่เหมือนโรงแรมมากกว่า นาย Trotsky นี่น่าจะเป็นผู้ต้องขัง ชนิดมีปลอกคอ จากนั้นก็มีการส่งตัวเขาต่อมายังเมืองบาร์เซโลนา เพื่อมาลงเรือเดินสมุทรของ Spanish Transatlantic Company ชื่อ Monserrat Trosky และครอบครัวนั่งเรือ Monserrat ข้ามมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก มาขึ้นบกที่เมืองนิวยอร์ค เมื่อ วันที่ 13 มกราคม ค.ศ. 1917 จากหนังสือชีวประวัติ ที่ Trosky เขียนเอง ชื่อ My Life คนมีปลอกคอ เล่าว่า ” อาชีพเดียวที่ผมทำ ตอนอยู่ที่นิวยอร์คคือ เป็นนักปฏิวัติเพื่อสังคมนิยม นอกเหนือจากการเขียนบทความเป็นครั้งคราว ลงในหนังสือพิมพ์ Novy Mir ของพวกสังคมนิยม ” แต่ระหว่างที่อยู่นิวยอร์ค เมืองของนายทุน Trosky นักสังคมนิยมและครอบครัว พักอยู่ในอพาร์ตเมนท์ ที่มีตู้เย็นและโทรศัพท์ ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นของหรูหรา ฟุ่มเฟือยอย่างมากในสมัยเมื่อ 100 ปีก่อน นอกจากนั้นครอบครัว Trotsky ยังเดินทาง ไปมาในเมืองนิวยอร์ค ด้วยรถยนต์ ที่มีคนขับรถประจำ นี่ใช่เรื่องของ Leon Trostky ซึ่งมีชื่อปรากฎในประวัติศาสตร์ว่า เป็นนักปฏิวัติสังคมนิยมคนดัง ของรัสเซีย แน่หรือ Trotsky เขียนเล่าถึงชีวิตเขาที่นิวยอร์ค ในชีวประวัติของเขาต่อไปว่า ” ระหว่างอยู่นิวยอร์ค ช่วงปี 1916 ถึง 1917 ผมมีรายได้เพียง 310 เหรียญ ซึ่งผมได้แจกเงินดังกล่าวทั้งหมดให้แก่คนรัสเซีย 5 คน ที่อยู่นิวยอร์ค เพื่อเป็นค่าเดินทางกลับบ้าน” ขณะเดียวกัน อพาร์ตเมนท์ที่เขาอยู่ ก็มีการจ่ายค่าเช่าล่วงหน้า 3 เดือน เขาต้องเลี้ยงดูเมีย 1 และลูกอีก 2 เขามีรถยนต์ใช้และมีคนขับรถประจำ นี่คือวิถีชีวิตของนักปฏิวัติเพื่อสังคมนิยม ที่อ้างว่าดำรงชีพ ด้วยการเขียนบทความลงหนังหนังสือพิมพ์เป็นครั้งคราว เรื่องราวของเขา คงไม่ตรงไปตรงมา อย่างที่เราเคยเข้าใจกัน หรือว่าพวกนักปฏิวัติ นักปฏิรูป เขาเป็นกันอย่างนี้ทั้งนั้น นอกจากนี้ ยังมีเรื่องเงินสดจำนวน 1 หมื่นเหรียญ ที่นาย Trotsky พกติดตัวและถูกเจ้าหน้าที่ค้นพบ ระหว่างที่เขาถูกเจ้าหน้าที่แคนาดาจับ ในเดือนเมษายน 1917 ที่เมือง Halifax เมื่อ 100 ปีก่อน เงิน 1 หมื่นเหรียญ นี่เป็นเงินจำนวนไม่เล็กน้อยนะครับ นักปฏิวัติเพื่อสังคมนิยม เอาเงินจำนวนนี้มาจากไหนกัน มีข่าวลือว่า เงิน 1 หมื่นเหรียญนั้น มาจากเยอรมัน ข่าวนี้มาจากฝ่ายข่าวกรองของอังกฤษ ซึ่งรายงานว่า นาย Gregory Weinstein ซึ่งต่อมา เป็นสมาชิกที่โด่งดังของ Soviet Bureau ประจำนครนิวยอร์ค เป็นคนรับเงินมา และนำมาส่งให้นาย Trotsky ที่นิวยอร์ค เงินจำนวนนี้มาจากเยอรมัน โดยการฟอกผ่าน Volks-zeitung น.ส.พ. รายวันของเยอรมัน ที่รัฐบาลเยอรมันสนับสนุนอยู่ ขณะที่มีข่าวว่า Trotsky ได้รับเงินอุดหนุนจากเยอรมัน Trotsky กลับเคลี่อนไหวอยู่ในอเมริกา ก่อนที่เขาจะเดินทางออกจากนิวยอร์ค ไปรัสเซีย….เพื่อไปทำการปฏิวัติ ! นิทานเรื่องจริง เรื่อง “ต้มข้ามศตวรรษ” บทที่ 1 “สร้างฉากปฏิวัติ” ตอน 2 วันที่ 5 มีนาคม 1917 หนังสือพิมพ์อเมริกัน พากันพาดหัวข่าวตัวโต ถึงความเป็นไปได้ ที่อเมริกาจะเข้าร่วมกับฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร เพื่อทำสงครามกับเยอรมัน คืนวันนั้นเอง Trotsky ก็ไปร่วมการชุมนุมของกลุ่มชาวสังคมนิยมในนิวยอร์คด้วย เขาพูดปลุกระดมให้ชาวสังคมนิยมในอเมริกา จัดการให้มีการนัดหยุดงาน และต่อต้านการเกณท์ทหาร หากอเมริกาจะเข้าร่วมทำสงครามต่อสู้กับเยอรมัน (ท่านผู้อ่านนิทาน คงพอจำกันได้ว่า ขณะที่ฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร ที่นำโดยอังกฤษ ประกาศสงครามกับฝ่ายเยอรมัน ในปี 1914 นั้น อเมริกายังไม่ได้ตัดสินใจว่าจะเข้าร่วมสงครามด้วย และมีสถานะเป็นประเทศเป็นกลางอยู่หลายปี) หลังจากนั้นประมาณสัปดาห์กว่า ในวันที่ 16 มีนาคม 1917 ก็เกิดเหตุการณ์ใหญ่ในรัสเซีย ซาร์นิโคลัส ที่ 2 ถูกปฏิวัติให้ลงจากบัลลังก์ โดยกลุ่มนักปฏิวัติ ที่นำโดยนาย Aleksandre Kerensky หนังสือพิมพ์ Novy Mir ได้มาขอสัมภาษณ์ Leon Trotsky ซึ่งให้ความเห็นไว้เหมือนคนรู้เหตุการณ์ล่วงหน้าว่า “คณะผู้บริหาร ที่ตั้งขึ้นมาทำหน้าที่แทนพวกซาร์ ที่ถูกปฏิวัติไปนั้น ไม่ได้เป็นตัวแทนของกลุ่มผลประโยชน์ หรือทำตามวัตถุประสงค์ ของพวกที่ต้องการปฏิวัติ คณะผู้บริหารนี้คงอยู่ไม่นานหรอก อีกหน่อยก็คงลาออกไป เพื่อให้กลุ่มคนที่สามารถจะนำพารัสเซียไปสู่ความเป็นประชาธิปไตย มาทำหน้าที่ต่อไป…” กลุ่มคนที่สามารถนำพารัสเซียไปสู่ความเป็นประชาธิปไตย ในความหมายของ Trotsky คือ พวก Bolsheviks และ Menshevik ซึ่งกำลังลี้ภัยอยู่ในต่างประเทศ และกำลังรีบเร่งเดินทางกลับรัส เซีย ส่วนคณะผู้บริหารนั้น หมายถึง รัฐบาลเฉพาะกาล Provisional Government ของกลุ่มนาย Aleksandr Kerensky ที่ทำการปฏิวัติในวันที่ 16 มีนาคม คศ 1917 แล้วนาย Trotsky ก็ออกเดินทางจากนครนิวยอร์ค เมื่อวันที่ 26 มีนาคม 1917 ด้วยเรือเดินสมุทรชื่อ S S Kristainiafjord เขาผ่านด่านตรวจ ขึ้นเรือดังกล่าวด้วยพาสปอร์ตของอเมริกา เขาเดินทางพร้อมพรรคพวกอีกหลายคน เพื่อจะไปทำการปฏิวัติ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีนักการเงินจากวอลสตรีท คอมมิวนิสต์สัญชาติอเมริกัน และบุคคลน่าสนใจอีกหลายคน ร่วมเดินทางไปกับนาย Trotsky ด้วย นาย Trotsky เอาพาสปอร์ตของอเมริกามาจากไหน นาย Jennings C. Wise เขียนไว้ในหนังสือเรื่อง “Woodlow Wilson : Disciple Revolution” ว่า นักประวัติศาสตร์จะต้องไม่ลืมว่า ประธานาธิบดีของอเมริกา นาย Woodlow Wilson เป็นนางฟ้า ที่มาเศกให้นาย Leon Trotsky เดินทางเข้ารัสเซียได้สำเร็จ ด้วยพาสปอร์ตของอเมริกา แม้ว่าจะมีการพยายามขัดขวางโดยตำรวจอังกฤษก็ตาม” คงเกินกว่าที่เราจะคาดคิดว่า ประธานาธิบดี Wilson เป็นนางฟ้ามาเศกให้นาย Trotsky ได้ถือพาสปอร์ตที่ออกโดยอเมริกา เพื่อเดินทางกลับไปรัสเซีย และไปดำเนินการปฏิวัติต่อให้สำเร็จ (ตามเป้าหมาย!?) และเป็นพาสปอร์ตของอเมริกา ที่สามารถผ่านเข้าออกได้ทุกด่านของอเมริกา รวมทั้งมีวีซ่าอนุญาตให้เข้าประเทศอังกฤษอีกด้วย นางฟ้าทำได้ทุกอย่างจริงๆ ตั้งแต่สมัยนั้น จนถึงเดี๋ยวนี่ แต่ควรจะเรียกว่าเป็นนางฟ้า หรือไม่ อ่านนิทานต่อไปเรื่อยๆ คนอ่านนิทาน คงนึกออกว่าควรจะเรียกว่าอะไร นิทานเรื่องจริง เรื่อง “ต้มข้ามศตวรรษ” บทที่ 1 “สร้างฉากปฏิวัติ” ตอน 3 ส่วนผสมของผู้โดยสาร ที่เดินทางไปในเรือ S S Kristainiafjord ได้ถูกบันทึกไว้โดยนาย Lincoln Steffens คอมมิวนิสต์ชาวอเมริกัน ดังนี้: “…รายชื่อผู้โดยสารยาวเหยียด และดูลึกลับน่าสนใจ แน่นอน Trotsky แสดงตัวเป็นหัวหน้ากลุ่มนักปฏิวัติ มีนักปฎิวัติชาวญี่ปุ่น นอนเคบินเดียวกับผม มีชาวดัชท์หลายคนที่รีบร้อนกลับเมืองชะวา พวกนี้ดูจะเป็นกลุ่มเดียวที่ไม่เกี่ยวโยงกับใคร ที่เหลือดูเหมือนจะเป็นผู้ที่เกี่ยวโยงกับสงครามโลกที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น นอกจากนี้ มีพวกนักการเงินวอลสตรีท 2 คน มุ่งหน้าไปเยอรมัน.. ” นาย Steffens เองนั้น โดยสารไปในเรือเดินสมุทร โดยคำเชิญของ นาย Charles R Crane เจ้าของกระเป๋าทุนใบใหญ่ที่สนับสนุน ประธานาธิบดี Woodlow Wilson ในการสมัครเข้าชิงตำแหน่งประธานาธิบดี นาย Crane นั้น เป็นรองประธานบริษัท Crane Company ซึ่งภายหลัง เป็นคนไปตั้งบริษัท Westinghouse สาขารัสเซีย หลังการปฏิวัติของรัสเซียรอบที่กลุ่ม Bolsheviks เป็นผู้ปฎิบัติการสำเร็จเรียบร้อย นาย Crane ยังเป็นหนึ่งในกรรมาธิการ Root Mission ที่ประธานาธิบดี Wilson ส่งไปสำรวจรัสเซียทุกตารางนิ้ว หลังการปฏิวัติอีกด้วย นาย Crane เดินทางไปรัสเซียในระหว่างช่วงปี ค.ศ.1890 ถึง 1930 ประมาณ 23 ครั้ง ลูกชายของเขา Richard Crane เป็นผู้ช่วยรัฐมนตรีต่างเทศ ที่ได้รับความไว้วางใจอย่างมาก ของนาย Robert Lansing รัฐมนตรีต่างเทศของอเมริกาขณะนั้น นาย William Dodd อดีตทูตอเมริกันประจำเยอรมัน พูดถึงนาย Crane ว่า เป็นผู้มีส่วนอย่างมาก ที่ทำให้การปฏิวัติในรัสเซียเมื่อเดือนมีนาคม โดยกลุ่มของ Aleksandr Kerensky กลายเป็นการปฏิวัติชั่วคราว ที่นำร่อง เปิดทางให้กับการปฏิวัติของจริง ที่เกิดขึ้นในเดือนพฤศจิกายน ในปีเดียวกัน นาย Steffens ได้บันทึกการสนทนา ที่เขาได้ยินระหว่างการเดินทางในเรือเดินสมุทรไว้ว่า “…. ดูเหมือนทุกคนจะเห็นพ้องกันว่า การปฏิวัติที่เกิดขึ้นเมื่อเดือนมีนาคม (โดย Aleksandr Kerensky) เป็นเพียงขั้นตอนแรกเท่านั้นเอง มันจะต้องมีตอนต่อไป Crane และพวกรัสเซียหัวก้าวหน้าที่อยู่ในเรือ คิดว่าพวกที่กำลังเดินทางจะไปเมือง Petrograd (ซึ่งต่อมาเปลี่ยนเป็นเมือง St Petersberg ) เพื่อไปทำการปฏิวัติซ้ำ…” เมื่อนาย Crane กลับมาอเมริกาในเดือนธันวาคม 1917 หลังจากการปฏิวัติบอลเชวิก Bolsheviks Revolution (หรือการปฏิวัติซ้ำ นั่นแหละ) สำเร็จเรียบร้อยแล้ว นาย Crane ก็ได้รับโทรเลข ลงวันที่ 11 ธันวาคม 1917 จากกระทรวงต่างประเทศ รายงานความคืบหน้าโดย นาย Maddin Summers กงสุลอเมริกันประจำกรุงมอสโคว์ พร้อมจดหมายปะหน้าจากนาย Summers ว่า ” กระผม ขออนุญาตนำเสนอรายงานที่แนบมา นี้ และสำเนาอีกหนึ่งฉบับ โดยขอให้กระทรวงฯ ได้โปรดนำส่งให้ นาย Charles Crane เพื่อทราบความคืบหน้าด้วย หวังว่าทางกระทรวงคงไม่ขัดข้อง ที่จะให้นาย Crane ได้เห็นรายงาน….” สำหรับท่านผู้อ่านนิทานเรื่องจริง เรื่องเหยื่อ คงพอจำชื่อนี้ได้ เขาคือ นาย Crane คนเดียวกันกับ เจ้าของรายงาน King Crane Report ที่ไปเดินสำรวจตะวันออกกลาง เพื่อทำประชามติว่า ชาวอาหรับต้องการจะอยู่ในความปกครอง ของใคร หลังจากถูกอังกฤษหลอก โดยให้สายลับ ที่เรารู้จักกันในนาม Lawrence of Arabia เป็นผู้นำชาวอาหรับ ไปรบกับตุรกี และยึดหลายเมืองในตะวันออกกลางได้ และเป็นนาย Crane คนเดียวกัน ที่สามารถจับมือให้กษัตริย์ซาอุดิอารเบีย ตัดสินใจเปิดประตูเมืองครั้งแรก และให้สัมปทานน้ำมันแก่อเมริกา เริ่มศักราช Petro Dollar ร่วมกันรวย ช่วยกันปั่น มาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ พอเห็นเค้าแล้วนะครับ ว่านิทานเรื่องนี้ค่อนข้างซับซ้อน สวัสดีครับ คนเล่านิทาน 23 เม.ย. 2558

9 Skillful Ways To Answer: “What Are You Doing With Your Future?” “What do you plan to do with your life?” It’s one of those big, intimidating questions that people tend to ask all the time when they find out you’re graduating high school or college. One minute you’re eating a piece of graduation cake and enjoying the relief of having no homework, and then suddenly all of your relatives are staring at you, waiting for you to walk them point-by-point through a map of the next five years. When you’re in this situation, it might be tempting to scream and run away as soon as they ask the question. Unfortunately, that kind of behavior is generally frowned upon. But there are ways to answer the question that take some of the pressure off of you, make the situation less awkward, and help you navigate the conversation with ease. Here are nine different approaches you can take when someone asks what you’re doing with your future. 1. Shorten the time frame. You may not have your long-term future mapped out (you aren’t alone!), but you might have plans coming up this summer or even just for the next semester. Talk about those more immediate plans instead. When people ask what you’re up to after graduation, they generally just want to know what the next step is. It’s totally okay to limit your answer to the next few months. Try an answer like: - I’m going camping with some friends this summer before I start my job search. - I’m finishing up my prerequisites at the community college while I decide on a university. 2. Talk about your passions. You don’t have to focus solely on accomplishments, job offers, or acceptance letters when someone asks about the future. Instead, talk about what you’re passionate about and the kinds of work or study you’d like to do in the following years. Try a phrase like: - I’m really interested in [subject], so I’m considering options related to that. - I know someone who works in [career field], and I really want to learn more about it. 3. Share the one thing you’re most excited about. If you got an exciting new job or acceptance into a dream school, that’s a great thing to share. If you’re still working towards your big goals, talk about something coming up on the horizon of your life that makes you really excited. Maybe it’s a trip you’re taking, a summer internship, tours of different schools, or even some interviews with various companies that you’re really interested in. Allow others to share in the excitement! 4. Ask for advice. Graduation is the start of a new chapter in life, and everyone who’s gone through that transition had to make important decisions about the future. When someone asks about your future, try asking them how they handled some of those big decisions. People love to talk about their own lives and offer advice. They might even have good suggestions on different steps to take that you hadn’t thought about yet. Say: - I’m still deciding on my next step. What did you do when you were my age? - I have two options I’m really excited about. Which one would you pick? 5. Use humor. Let’s be honest: this is a tricky question to answer, and it can make you feel like you’re being put on the spot. If it makes you more comfortable, lighten the mood by injecting some humor into the conversation. Humor can be a great way to deflect when you feel like someone is judging your responses, and it’s also an easy way to change the subject if you’d rather avoid the topic entirely. Try something like: - Well, my first commitment is catching up on all the TV shows I missed this semester. What about you? - You mean to tell me there’s more work after graduation? 6. Focus on mental health. It’s normal to need some breathing room between big life changes, especially when a part of your academic life took place during a pandemic! If you’re taking some time off, using the next few months to relax and regroup, or just taking your time while you consider different options, it’s OK to say that. It can be as simple as: - Finishing school took a lot of work, so I’m taking some time to consider my next steps. - I’m taking some time off to reset, so I’m fresh for my next opportunities. 7. Turn the question around. If being asked about your future feels like an interrogation, invite the other person to share their future plans as well. Making the question more conversational can help ease any tension you might feel or even change the subject if that’s what you’re aiming for. When there’s more of a back-and-forth happening, it won’t feel so much like you’re sitting in the hot seat. You could say: - I have a few trips lined up and then I’m thinking about doing [x]. What do you have coming up this year? - I’m thinking about [X], but haven’t decided. What have you been up to? 8. Talk about the big picture. You may not know exactly what you want to do next, but you likely have some ideas about what you want your life to look like in the future. Go big! Talk about your overarching goals and what really makes you tick. You’re working towards something, even if you don’t know every single step along the path yet. Challenge expectations.
