That being said, the science and theory behind the multiverse gets really complicated really quickly. If you’re still committed to trying to untangle this multiverse madness, there are a bunch of terms you’ll need to learn first before you can begin your multidimensional journey.

In science and math, a dimension is a property of space. You probably know that our spatial movement involves three dimensions: height, width, and depth. You can move forward and back, left and right, and up and down. There is also a fourth dimension: time. On Earth, time only moves forward at a constant rate. However, the measurement of time starts to behave oddly once you start moving really fast or decide to hang out around a black hole–more on them later. Space-time, also known as the space-time continuum, refers to the four-dimensional space that our reality exists in. This includes the three spatial dimensions together with time. Understanding space-time is important to getting a grip on the idea of the multiverse and where—and even when—other worlds might exist. Given how huge the universe is, we would need to better understand space-time and develop technology for traveling through both space and time to possibly discover worlds and universes beyond our own.

Cosmology is a branch of science that studies the nature of the universe. Cosmology often combines astronomy and physics when describing celestial phenomena. Basically, cosmology is concerned with studying where our universe came from and how it works. In practice, this involves a lot of extremely complicated math and experiments. The term cosmology also refers to a branch of philosophy that theorizes how the universe works, what our place in it is, and whether or not there might be other universes out there somewhere.

Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that asks questions about the nature of reality and the universe. Once you start looking at things at the subatomic level, the normally impossible seems to become possible. For example, the study of quantum mechanics has proven it is entirely possible for an atom to exist in two different places at the same time. Scientifically, this would suggest the idea of multiple identical universes existing simultaneously may be possible, and most multiverse theories rely on quantum mechanics to support the argument that the multiverse is possible.

the many-worlds interpretation

The many-worlds interpretation, also known as the Many-Worlds Theory, is a theory about the existence of other worlds or a multiverse. According to this idea, every possible event that could happen exists in another world. For example, if you roll a six-sided die and it comes up as a four, the MWI theorizes that there exist five other worlds where the other five rolls happened.

Out of all multiverse theories, this one is especially tempting to scientists because it doesn’t imply that many random universes somehow exist. Randomness is a problematic concept in science, and this theory addresses it by suggesting all the universes exist. Also, it is possible to test this theory–albeit using methods that are much too complicated to go into here. Still, even this multiverse explanation remains entirely theoretical until we make new discoveries in quantum mechanics.

The big bang, according to the big bang theory, was a sudden massive burst of matter and energy that created the universe billions of years ago. This theory is the most prevalent origin story of the universe and has supporting evidence such as the presence of cosmic microwave background, space radiation whose only scientific explanation is that it is leftover from when the big bang occurred.

Some multiverse theories speculate that the expansion that began with the big bang never stopped and that the universe is still expanding. Based on this inflation theory, it might be possible that the universe will continue to expand infinitely. This possibility leads to a multiverse theory in which “randomness” repeats and infinite “Earths” with infinite duplicates of “You” exist or will exist somewhere as the universe continues to grow indefinitely.

Another multiverse theory based on the big bang is the bubble theory. This theory speculates that different parts of space-time expanded at different rates. According to the theory, these “bubbles” of space-time resulted in bubble universes with different laws of physics. This multiverse theory suggests that our universe is just one of the many bubble universes out there.

observable universe

The term observable universe is used to refer to the portion of the universe we can see or could possibly see. Basically, the observable universe is everything we can see using devices like telescopes, probes, or other astronomical equipment. When discussing the possibility of a multiverse, the answer seems to lie outside the observable universe. As far as we know, there are no “bizarro Earths” out there or galaxies with different laws of physics. So, a multiverse theory may suggest that parallel worlds, galaxies, or universes exist beyond the limits of the observable universe that we can see.

string theory

Without getting too confusing, string theory is a theory in physics that suggests that subatomic particles in quantum mechanics are string-like objects rather than points. String theory also supposes that space-time actually consists of more than three spatial dimensions. The theory states that these dimensions are simply so small that we are unable to detect them.

If string theory is true, these extra dimensions would make the multiverse scientifically possible. In one interpretation of string theory, for example, it is theorized that our universe exists on a membrane, called a brane. Our world exists on a three-dimensional brane alongside other branes which may have more dimensions and thus different laws of physics. If we could somehow reach those other branes, we may discover entirely new worlds and universes.

black holes

Black holes are extremely dense celestial objects whose gravity is so intense that not even light can escape them. This means that we can’t even “see” them with astronomical equipment and must detect them using the area around them. Black holes are mysterious parts of our universe where the laws of physics break down and normal scientific rules don’t apply. So, what would happen if someone entered a black hole?

The assumption is that a person would simply be destroyed by gravity. However, another theory among physicists is that black holes might be tunnels or wormholes that lead to other universes. If this theory is true, it is assumed that our own universe resembles a black hole in other universes as well.

Trump tariff uncertainties push safe-haven gold to record high

(Reuters) - Safe-haven demand due to geopolitical uncertainties and concerns over global economic growth amid U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff plans have hoisted gold prices to a record high, once again bringing the key $3,000 threshold onto investors' radar.

Spot gold climbed to a record high of $2,798.40 a troy ounce on Thursday, starting 2025 with fresh vigour after logging its strongest annual performance since 2010 last year.

"There's concerns that some of the (economic) growth may come down because of the policies and tariffs that the current administration is looking to implement," said Phillip Streible, chief market strategist at Blue Line Futures.

"So when you've got higher inflation and lower growth, stagflation becomes the economic theme. Gold tends to work very well in that particular environment."

Trump's tariff plans are widely perceived as inflationary and with potential to trigger trade wars, driving up safe-haven demand for bullion as it is traditionally seen as a hedge against price pressures and geopolitical uncertainty.

"I can see (gold) trying to reach up to that $2,900 level at some point during the first quarter; after we breach that, we'll set new levels," said Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at RJO Futures.

"At some point this year, gold could ultimately trade north of $3,000."

THE US MARKET

Amid concerns about the U.S. import tariff plans, the U.S. gold futures have been trading at a premium to the spot price for several months and widened the price spread again on Thursday.


In a sign of these concerns, 12.9 million troy ounces of gold were delivered to COMEX-approved warehouses since late November, raising stocks there by 73.5% to 30.4 million ounces, the highest since July 2022.

The deliveries came from London, Switzerland and other major gold-trading hubs.

The London Bullion Market Association said on Thursday that it was monitoring the situation and liaising with CME Group (NASDAQ:CME) and U.S. authorities.

London gold market stocks and liquidity remain strong with the average daily trade volume since the start of January is 47.1 million ounces, the association added.

GOLD AND THE US RATE EXPECTATIONS

Gold hit multiple record peaks last year, bolstered by the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting cycle, safe-haven demand and robust central bank buying.

The Fed, in its January meeting kept benchmark interest rates unchanged as widely expected, after easing a full basis point in 2024. This marks the first pause since the start of its easing cycle in September.

The non-yielding bullion tends to thrive in a low-interest rate environment.

As to purchases by central banks, the People's Bank of China has been a key driver of gold demand as it kept on adding bullion to its reserves over the past year despite the price growth - in what analysts see as the PBOC's broader strategy to diversify the reserves.

Analysts suggest that continued purchases by China's central bank could provide further support to gold prices in the coming months.

US probing if China’s DeepSeek got Nvidia chips through Singapore- Bloomberg

Investing.com-- U.S. officials are probing whether Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek sourced advanced NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) processors through distributors in Singapore, potentially dodging U.S. sanctions, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Authorities are investigating whether DeepSeek bypassed U.S. restrictions on advanced chip sales to China and used advanced Nvidia technology when developing its R1 model.

The Bloomberg report comes just days after DeepSeek’s R1 took the market by storm, as it appeared to be able to match rival offerings, particularly ChatGPT, while using older hardware and a substantially smaller budget.

DeepSeek- which is backed by Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer- had said in July 2022 that it owned and operated a cluster of 10,000 A100 Nvidia chips, which are a less advanced version of Nvidia’s AI chips, developed specifically for China. The chips are also compliant with U.S. export restrictions.

But R1’s success- where the chatbot overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store- sparked questions over whether the model was developed using advanced Western technology.

Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang said during a recent interview that DeepSeek has 50,000 Nvidia H100 chips- from Nvidia’s Hopper line, which are currently the most advanced chips sold by the chipmaker. Wang did not provide any evidence for his claims.

Bloomberg had reported earlier this week that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was probing whether DeepSeek improperly accessed proprietary data from OpenAI.

DeepSeek’s release battered U.S. technology stocks this week, with market darling Nvidia wiping out nearly $600 billion in value as the apparently cheaper-to-run and more efficient AI model sparked questions over just how justified were the hundreds of billions of dollars being poured into AI infrastructure.

DeepSeek R1 also sparked questions over just how ahead U.S. companies were in AI development when compared to their Chinese peers.

London gold market queues up to borrow central bank gold after big shipments to US, sources say

LONDON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - London bullion market players are racing to borrow gold from central banks, which store bullion in London, following a surge in gold deliveries to the United States on speculation of potential import tariffs there, two sources familiar with the matter said.
The minimum waiting time to load gold out of the Bank of England, which stores gold for central banks, has reached four weeks, one of the sources said. In normal times, the release time is a few days or a week.

U.S. President Donald Trump has not mentioned precious metals in his tariff plans, but the risk has been enough to boost gold deliveries to New York as part of the market sought to hedge its positions on the U.S. COMEX (CME.O), opens new tab exchange and part sought to benefit from a jump in the price premium of COMEX futures over London spot prices .
London is home to the world's largest over-the-counter gold trading hub, where market players trade directly with each other rather than via an exchange.

"The key with the BoE is that they are not a commercial vault so not prepared to handle the onslaught of gold borrowing banks are requesting from the central banks," said Robert Gottlieb, an industry expert and former head of precious metals at Koch Supply and Trading.
The size of so-called Loco London free float, the amount of gold readily available to the London OTC market stored in London, has fallen after the jump in supplies to New York.

Over the last two months, 12.2 million troy ounces of gold were delivered to COMEX-approved warehouses , raising stocks there by 70% to 29.8 million ounces, the highest since August 2022.

Reports of the flow of gold to New York attracted the attention of the British parliament's Treasury Committee, one of whose members asked BoE Governor Andrew Bailey on Wednesday whether he saw any risks in this development.

"We are not in the gold standard anymore, it doesn't have significance for policy in that sense," Bailey replied, referring to an extinct monetary system where gold backed the value of a currency.
However, London remained a major gold market, and "if you want to be involved in that market and you want to trade and use your gold, you really need to have it in London," Bailey added.

Deliveries to the U.S. left less free-float metal in London vaults, the metal that is not owned by central banks or holdings of physically-backed gold exchange-traded funds. This in turn boosted demand from players in London who are ready to lease their gold and make it available to the OTC market.

Liquidity challenges in other large trading hubs are less pronounced than in London but are being felt globally, said Alexander Zumpfe, a precious metals trader at Heraeus Metals.

"The logistical complexities of moving large quantities of gold, particularly from Europe to the U.S., are amplifying these stresses. Asia has also seen some knock-on effects, particularly in markets like Singapore and Hong Kong," Zumpfe added.
