Investing.com-- U.S. officials are probing whether Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek sourced advanced NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) processors through distributors in Singapore, potentially dodging U.S. sanctions, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Authorities are investigating whether DeepSeek bypassed U.S. restrictions on advanced chip sales to China and used advanced Nvidia technology when developing its R1 model.

The Bloomberg report comes just days after DeepSeek’s R1 took the market by storm, as it appeared to be able to match rival offerings, particularly ChatGPT, while using older hardware and a substantially smaller budget.

DeepSeek- which is backed by Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer- had said in July 2022 that it owned and operated a cluster of 10,000 A100 Nvidia chips, which are a less advanced version of Nvidia’s AI chips, developed specifically for China. The chips are also compliant with U.S. export restrictions.

But R1’s success- where the chatbot overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store- sparked questions over whether the model was developed using advanced Western technology.

Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang said during a recent interview that DeepSeek has 50,000 Nvidia H100 chips- from Nvidia’s Hopper line, which are currently the most advanced chips sold by the chipmaker. Wang did not provide any evidence for his claims.

Bloomberg had reported earlier this week that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was probing whether DeepSeek improperly accessed proprietary data from OpenAI.

DeepSeek’s release battered U.S. technology stocks this week, with market darling Nvidia wiping out nearly $600 billion in value as the apparently cheaper-to-run and more efficient AI model sparked questions over just how justified were the hundreds of billions of dollars being poured into AI infrastructure.

DeepSeek R1 also sparked questions over just how ahead U.S. companies were in AI development when compared to their Chinese peers.

buzzword

code word
A code word is a word or phrase that has a secret meaning that only a select few people know. For example, spies might agree to use the code word “red eagle” when they need to identify each other. The term code word is also often used to refer to a euphemism that is used in place of harsher language as in My mom said my room “needed some love,” which is code word for saying “my room is a huge mess.”

nonword
A nonword is a collection of letters that isn’t accepted as an actual word. For example, “definate” is not an English word; it is a nonword that is a common misspelling of the word definite.

keyword
A keyword is a major word in a sentence, passage, or document that typically reveals the central meaning or most important information. In technology, a keyword is a word or phrase typed into a search engine or reference software to search through content.

password
A password is a secret word or phrase that a person must recite in order to gain access to restricted areas, information, etc. For example, a door guard may only let people enter a fortress if they say the password “swordfish.” In computing, a password is a string of characters that a user must enter correctly in order to log into an account, use wireless internet, or otherwise bypass electronic security.

guide word
The term guide word is used as a synonym of headword to refer to a word or phrase used at the top of articles or entries in reference works.

curse word
A curse word, also known as a cussword or a dirty word, is a word that is considered to be profane or offensive. For example, the words ass, crap, and piss are some examples of English words that are usually considered to be curse words.

kangaroo word
The term kangaroo word refers to a word that contains its own synonym within it, spelled in the correct order. For example, the kangaroo word barren contains the word bare and the word catacomb contains the word tomb.

ghost word
A ghost word is a word that entered a language by mistake, such as a typo or translation error, rather than from actual linguistic use. For example, the word syllabus seems to have resulted from a misreading of Greek.

counterword
A counterword is a word that has picked up a much looser meaning than it originally had. Counterwords have so many meanings and/or are used so generally that they are almost meaningless. Words like good, fine, gross, awful, cute, and nice are some examples of counterwords. (You know we have better synonyms for these, starting with nice.)

loanword
A loanword is a word from one language that is used in another with little or no changes in meaning or spelling. Some English words that are loanwords from other languages include incognito (Italian), schadenfreude (German), sushi (Japanese), and piñata (Spanish).

weasel word
A weasel word is a word that weakens a statement by making it sound more confusing, ambiguous, or noncommittal. For example, the word probably is an example of a weasel word in the sentence I’ll probably do better on my next math test.

nonce word
A nonce word is a word created for only one specific occasion. For example, the cartoon The Simpsons invented the word cromulent just for the sake of making a single joke about language. (That’s not the only word they created!)

Words From The 2010s So Lit We Should Bring Them Back

The 2010s were the era of Instagram, Beyonce’s Lemonade album, and arguing about whether a viral photo showed a blue dress or a white one. The decade may not seem like that long ago, but a lot has changed since then, including many parts of our language.

Vocabulary evolves quickly, especially when you’re talking about the words associated with slang and pop culture. Take yeet, for example. One minute, everyone was saying it. The next? Well, it might be hard to recall the last time you’ve heard it.

The good news is that the coolest things from previous decades almost always come back in style again. 2010s nostalgia is having a moment, and we’re taking that opportunity to look back at some of the defining words of the decade. Here are 16 2010s slang words that might be ready for a comeback.

bae

Remember bae? In the 2010s, this term of endearment was all over the place. The word, which is “an affectionate term used to address or refer to one’s girlfriend, boyfriend, spouse, etc.,” gained popularity in 2012, thanks to a viral tweet. The term originated in Black culture, most likely as a shortened form of babe or baby. It went on to achieve meme status before fading into the background at the start of the next decade.

catfish

Catfish isn’t just a type of fish. It’s also a verb that means “to deceive, swindle, etc., by assuming a false identity or personality online.” This slang meaning of catfish took over in 2010 with the release of Catfish by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The documentary told the story of a man who was romantically duped by a stranger online. Catfish is still used to describe this kind of trickery, but the word is less common than it used to be, perhaps because knowledge of this type of dishonesty is more widespread.

first world problem

Oh, your favorite slang went out of style? Sounds like a first world problem. (Just kidding.) In the 2010s, first world problem emerged as a facetious way of pointing out a “fairly minor problem, frustration, or complaint associated with a relatively high standard of living, as opposed to serious problems associated with poverty.” The phrase dates back to the late ’70s, but it wasn’t seen online until around 2005. It got its start as a hashtag on Twitter and later became one of the go-to phrases of the 2010s.

yeet

Yeet began as the name of a popular dance in Black internet culture. By the mid-2010s, its use in viral videos had solidified its place as “an exclamation of excitement, approval, surprise, or all-around energy.” In 2018, yeet was voted the American Dialect Society’s 2018 Slang/Informal Word of the Year. Perhaps it’s because life during a pandemic hasn’t given us many reasons to say it, but yeet hasn’t held the same level of popularity in the years since its peak.

stan

These days, it’s popular for fans of musicians or actors to assume a group name related to their favorite celebrity, like Taylor Swift’s “swifties.” But in the 2010s, these groups were usually called stans. A stan is “an overly enthusiastic fan, especially of a celebrity.” The term originated in the early 2000s as a blend of stalker and fan, influenced by the rapper Eminem’s 2000 song “Stan.” Luckily, the term is mostly used in a lighthearted way.

humblebrag

We don’t mean to humblebrag, but we just have so many classic 2010s words to share with you. A humblebrag is “a statement intended as a boast or brag but disguised by a humble apology, complaint, etc.” The term is credited to writer and TV producer Harris Wittels, who created the Twitter account @Humblebrag in 2010 to showcase real-life examples of the act. It’s likely that many people still humblebrag online, so maybe it’s time to bring back the term.

slaps

If you say “this slaps” when you hear an awesome new song, you probably picked up your slang during the 2010s. Slaps is a slang verb meaning “to be excellent or amazing.” Believe it or not, slaps has been used to mean “first-rate” since at least the mid-1800s. It may not be as popular at the moment, but we have a feeling it will come back around again.

on fleek

For a brief moment in time, anything impressive or stylish was said to be on fleek. Now? Well, on fleek isn’t quite as on fleek as it used to be. Fleek means “flawlessly styled, groomed, etc.; looking great.” It’s typically used to describe someone’s clothing or appearance. The word was coined in its current sense by internet user Kayla Newman in 2014, and quickly became one of the most popular slang terms of the 2010s. Like a lot of popular slang, it may have existed in Black culture before it became widespread.

lit

Looking for a word that means “amazing, awesome, or cool.” How about lit? This 2010s word joined the ranks of cool, rad, and other terms to describe things people find great. Though its slang usage was most popular in the 2010s, lit has existed since at least 1895 as a way of saying “intoxicated.” It may not be new and trending, but this word isn’t likely to go away any time soon.

milkshake duck

Before canceled became everyone’s go-to word for internet controversies, there was milkshake duck. This phrase describes “a person (or thing) who becomes popular on the internet for a positive reason, but as their popularity takes off and people dig into their past, they become an object of outrage.” Milkshake duck is taken from a 2016 tweet by Australian cartoonist Ben Ward. The phrase may be less common than it once was, but the phenomenon it describes is still a major part of life online.

slay

Are we finally ready to slay some more? Slay means “to do something spectacularly well, especially when it comes to fashion, artistic performance, or self-confidence.” Slay being used as a way of saying “looking fashionable” can be traced back to the 1800s, but its usage in the 2010s is more closely linked to Black, Latinx, and queer ball culture. Whether it’s great clothes, hair, dancing, or something else, slay is a way of saying someone is killing it.

fire

In the 2010s, fire was frequently used as an adjective. Saying something was fire meant it was “cool, excellent, exciting, etc.” Fire can also be shortened to fya or fiyah, the origins of which can be traced to Black English. The term may have burned out towards the end of the decade, but we’re still holding a torch for this one. See what we did there?

fam

There’s nothing we love more than reminiscing about words with the fam. That’s you, of course. Fam means “a close friend or group of friends thought of as family.” Though the word is a shortened form of family, it generally describes chosen friends rather than actual family members. It became popular on Twitter and other social media platforms in the mid-2010s.

thirst

A glass of water won’t cure this type of thirst. Those who were teens and young adults in the 2010s might remember thirst as a slang term meaning “to have a strong desire.” In other words, thirsting for someone means you find them attractive. This usage also spawned other phrases, such as thirst trap, which is a social media post shared to elicit sexual attention. Mostly, we’re just thirsty for this word to make a comeback.

TFW

TFW stands for that feeling when. It was the basis of a popular 2010s meme that people used to express their emotions in relatable or unrelatable situations. For example, “TFW you just got cozy in bed but you need to use the bathroom.” The exact origins of the meme and corresponding phrase aren’t known, but it’s been in use on the internet since before 2018.

yaass

Can we get a yaaas for this final word? This interjection is an alternative form of yes, and it indicates ”a strong expression of excitement, approval, agreement, etc.” Most often, it’s accompanied by queen or kween, as in yaaas kween, but it can also be used on its own. This phrase originates in drag culture, where it’s commonly said in response to someone’s excellent style.

สำหรับผม ปี 2567 ที่เพิ่งผ่านไป ถือเป็นปีที่เหนื่อยมาก เพราะต้องทำงานแข่งกับเวลาที่หมดไปอย่างรวดเร็วในแต่ละวันโดยแทบไม่มีการหยุดพัก แต่อย่างน้อยผมก็ทำสำเร็จเกือบ 100% ตามที่บอกไว้ครับ

1. ตรึงค่าไฟฟ้าไว้ที่หน่วยละ 4.18 บาท และคงค่าไฟฟ้าสำหรับกลุ่มเปราะบางที่ใช้ไฟฟ้าไม่เกินเดือนละ 300 หน่วย ไว้ที่ราคาหน่วยละ 3.99 บาท มาได้ตลอดทั้งปี 2567 สำหรับปี2568 ช่วงเดือนมกราคมถึงเมษายน 2568 ค่าไฟฟ้าก็จะอยู่ที่หน่วยละ 4.15 บาท ทั้งนี้ ด้วยการสนับสนุนของท่านนายกฯ เศรษฐาและท่านนายกฯ แพทองธาร

2.ร่างกฎหมายกำกับการประกอบกิจการค้าน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงเสร็จแล้ว ตอนนี้กำลังตรวจแก้ไขต้นร่างเกือบเสร็จแล้ว รออีกนิดนะครับ กฎหมายนี้จะมีกติกาที่ไม่ให้ปรับราคาน้ำมันขึ้นลงรายวัน มีระบบพิสูจน์ต้นทุน และยกเลิกการอ้างอิงราคาน้ำมันที่ตลาดสิงคโปร์ โดยนำระบบต้นทุนบวกค่าใช้จ่ายจริงที่เรียกว่าระบบ COST PLUS มาใช้แทน ที่สำคัญคือ จะให้มีน้ำมันเพื่อเกษตรกร และชาวประมงในราคาที่ถูกลง และเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้ประกอบการขนส่งและองค์กรสาธารณกุศลสามารถนำน้ำมันเข้ามาใช้ได้เอง ซึ่งจะช่วยลดต้นทุนลงได้มาก และยังจะเปิดโอกาสให้รัฐสามารถจัดให้มีน้ำมันเพื่อผู้มีรายได้น้อยด้วย

3. กฎหมายฉบับที่สองที่ทำเสร็จแล้ว คือกฎหมายส่งเสริมการใช้ไฟฟ้าจากพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์ หรือ โซลาร์รูฟ ซึ่งจะพังทลายกฎเกณฑ์กติกาเดิมๆ ที่ทำให้การใช้ไฟฟ้าจากพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์เป็นเรื่องยุ่งยากและล่าช้า ผมยกเลิกการขออนุญาตทุกรูปแบบโดยเปลี่ยนมาเป็นการติดตั้งได้ทันทีตามกฎเกณฑ์ที่หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องประกาศให้ทราบโดยทั่วกัน เมื่อติดตั้งแล้วก็ใช้ระบบแจ้งให้ทราบ จากนั้นแต่ละหน่วยงานก็จะไปตรวจสอบเอง หากมีสิ่งใดต้องแก้ไขก็ว่ากันไป ไม่ต้องเสียเวลารอการอนุญาตจากเจ้าหน้าที่ไม่กี่คน ขณะที่คนทั้งประเทศต้องรอกันทั้งชาติ กฎหมายนี้จะเสนอในนามของรัฐบาลด้วย แต่ขั้นตอนช้า ต้องดำเนินการอีกหลายอย่าง ผมเลยให้เสนอเข้าสภาฯ ในนามของพรรครวมไทยสร้างชาติก่อน ซึ่งดำเนินการเสร็จสิ้นแล้วตั้งแต่วันที่ 24 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2567 ครับ

สำหรับปี 2568 นี้ สิ่งที่ผมวางเป้าหมายไว้เป็นเรื่องแรกเลย คือ จะร่างกฎหมายสำรองน้ำมันเพื่อความมั่นคง หรือStrategic Petroleum reserve (SPR) ที่จะนำมาใช้แทนกองทุนน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงและสร้างความมั่นคงให้ประเทศ ซึ่งจะทำต่อจากกฎหมายกำกับกิจการค้าน้ำมัน ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าประเทศเราไม่เคยมีสำรองน้ำมันของประเทศเลย ที่มีอยู่ก็เป็นการสำรองของภาคเอกชนเพื่อประโยชน์ทางการค้าเป็นหลักตามกฎหมายการค้าน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงเท่านั้น และเก็บสำรองเพียงประมาณ 20-25 วัน แต่หลักเกณฑ์ของการสำรองน้ำมันเพื่อความมั่นคงของประเทศต้องไม่ใช่เพื่อการค้าแต่เพื่อประโยชน์ของชาติ และต้องมีสำรองขั้นต่ำ 90 วัน โดยผมจะนำระบบนี้มาใช้แทนกองทุนน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิง จะเปลี่ยนการเก็บเงินจากการซื้อขายน้ำมันที่ไล่เก็บจากประชาชนไปเข้ากองทุนน้ำมัน เป็นระบบเก็บเป็นน้ำมันจากผู้ค้าน้ำมันแทน ระบบนี้จะทำให้ราคาน้ำมันลดลงทันทีอย่างน้อย 2.50 บาท ถึง 4 บาทกว่าๆ แล้วแต่ประเภทของน้ำมันเพราะไม่มีการเก็บเงินส่วนนี้จากประชาชนอีก แล้วใช้น้ำมันในส่วนนี้ไปชดเชยราคาน้ำมันให้ผู้ค้าน้ำมันแทนเงินที่เก็บจากประชาชน

ส่วนเรื่องค่าไฟฟ้าจะต่อยอดจากกฎหมายส่งเสริมการใช้ไฟฟ้าจากพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์เพื่อช่วยประชาชนให้ลดค่าใช้จ่ายด้านไฟฟ้าลงนั้น ผมกำลังดำเนินการให้กระทรวงพลังงานผลิตอุปกรณ์ที่เป็นอุปกรณ์หลักในการผลิตไฟฟ้าพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์ที่เรียกว่าเครื่อง Invertor ที่มีราคาแพงประมาณเครื่องละ 30,000-40,000 บาท โดยน่าจะผลิตได้ในราคาเพียง 1 ใน 3 ของราคาในท้องตลาดเท่านั้น ตอนนี้เครื่องต้นแบบผ่านการทดสอบขั้นที่หนึ่งจากสถาบัน สวทช. แล้ว และกำลังรอทดสอบอีกสองขั้นตอน เมื่อผ่านหมดก็จะเริ่มเข้าสู่แผนการผลิตจำหน่ายให้ประชาชนในราคาถูกที่สุด และจะหารือกับกระทรวงการคลังเพื่อให้ประชาชนสามารถหักค่าใช้จ่ายส่วนนี้จากภาระภาษีเงินได้ประจำปีด้วย อีกทั้งยังกำลังดำเนินการหาแนวทางให้กองทุนส่งเสริมการอนุรักษ์พลังงาน ในสังกัดกระทรวงพลังงานสามารถสนับสนุนเงินทุนหรืออย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งให้ประชาชนด้วย

ผมเชื่อว่าผลงานของรัฐบาลโดยกระทรวงพลังงานตั้งแต่ปลายปี 2567 ต่อยอดไปถึงปี 2568 จะช่วยลดภาระค่าใช้จ่ายให้พี่น้องประชาชนได้ตามนโยบายรัฐบาลและตามที่ท่านนายกฯแพทองธารประกาศไว้ และจะช่วยทำให้ประเทศมีความมั่นคงด้านพลังงานมากขึ้นด้วย

สุดท้าย ผมเคยพูดไว้ว่า สิ่งที่ผมทำเพื่อพี่น้องประชาชนจะมีคนที่เคยได้ประโยชน์กันมากว่า 50 ปีเป็นอย่างน้อยต้องเสียประโยชน์ ผมรู้ว่าผมจะต้องโดนวิชามารกระหน่ำแบบไหน แต่ผมไม่กลัวและผมจะทำให้ได้ ขอเพียงพี่น้องประชาชนช่วยเป็นกำแพงให้ผมพิงเท่านั้นก็พอ ความสำเร็จของการทำงานเพื่อประชาชนเริ่มทยอยปรากฏให้เห็นมาตั้งแต่ปลายปี 2567 ตามที่ผมวางเป้าหมายไว้

และเป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่าในช่วงสองสามเดือนก่อนสิ้นปี 2567 ผมถูกกลุ่มคนที่เรียกตัวเองว่าสื่อบางกลุ่มรุมกระหน่ำปั้นข่าวทุกรูปแบบ โดยเฉพาะเมื่อมีข่าวเปิดตัวพรรคใหม่ทุนหนา ก็มีบัญชีอวตารเปิดใหม่พรึ่บเพื่อใช้ถล่มผมแบบไม่ยั้งมือ แต่ผมไม่เคยหวั่นไหวและจะทำในสิ่งที่ต้องทำเสมอครับ

พอเห็นว่ากลยุทธ์แบบเดิมทำท่าจะเล่นงานไม่ไหว ก็ไปปั้นข่าวว่าผมขัดแย้งกับนายกฯบ้างขัดแย้งกับพรรคแกนนำรัฐบาลบ้าง ทั้งๆ ที่ผมและทั้งนายกฯ แพทองธารและอดีตนายกฯ เศรษฐาไม่เคยมีอะไรขัดแย้งกันเลย

แถมทั้งสองท่านก็สนับสนุนการทำงานของผมตลอดมา เพราะเป็นไปตามนโยบายรัฐบาลทั้งสิ้น ผลงานเรื่องการลดค่าใช้จ่ายด้านพลังงานก็สำเร็จด้วยดีเพราะการสนับสนุนทั้งสองท่าน ล่าสุดที่ท่านนายกฯ แพทองธารประกาศว่าจะทำลายทุนผูกขาด ท่านก็พูดจริง ประชุมคณะกรรมการนโยบายพลังงานแห่งชาติ หรือ กพช. ครั้งหลังสุดเมื่อวันที่ 25 ธันวาคมที่ผ่านมา ท่านนายกฯ ติดภารกิจด่วนก็มอบให้ผมเป็นประธานการประชุมแทน และกำชับให้ผมขอมติคณะกรรมการ กพช. ให้ดำเนินการแก้ไขปัญหาเรื่องประมูลไฟฟ้าพลังงานสะอาดด้วย โดยมีท่านเลขาธิการนายกรัฐมนตรี นพ.พรหมินทร์ เลิศสุริย์เดช เป็นผู้ประสานงานและติดตามงานตลอดเวลา เพราะฉะนั้น ใครจะปั้นข่าวอะไรผมไม่สนใจ ผมสนใจแต่การทำงานและประโยชน์ของประชาชนและประเทศชาติเท่านั้นครับ

อย่างไรก็ตาม ผมขอขอบคุณอีกครั้ง สำหรับทุกกำลังใจที่มีให้ผมและพรรครวมไทยสร้างชาติมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และขอบคุณที่เป็นกำแพงเหล็กให้ผมพิงในการทำงาน และในปี 2568 นี้ ผมจะทำงานให้หนักขึ้นเพื่อความสำเร็จและประโยชน์ชาติบ้านเมืองครับ

การประท้วงในซีเรียทวีความรุนแรงเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ รัฐบาลชุดใหม่ภายใต้การปกครองของกลุ่มกบฏ HTS ต้องส่งกำลังเสริมเพิ่มเติมไปยังเมืองต่างๆ

สาเหตุมาจากความไม่พอใจของพลเมืองท้องถิ่นที่เพิ่มมากขึ้นเกี่ยวกับการจับกุมแบบไม่เลือกหน้าของเจ้าหน้าที่รัฐบาลที่แต่งตั้งกลุ่ม HTS เข้ามาทำหน้าที่

การเผาทำลายสถานที่ทางศาสนา การสังหารผู้คนต่างลัทธิศาสนา และความล้มเหลวที่รัฐบาลชุดใหม่ในการรับรองความปลอดภัยและการมีส่วนร่วม

ชาวซุนนีกำลังเข้าร่วมกับผู้ประท้วงที่เป็นชาวชีอะ อลาวี และคริสเตียนในการเรียกร้องให้ส่งนักรบต่างชาติที่รวมอยู่ในกลุ่ม HTS ออกจากประเทศ เนื่องจากพลเมืองเหล่านี้มองว่าพวกนักรบต่างชาติของ HTS ไม่ฟังคำสั่งของรัฐบาลกลาง และก่อเหตุปล้นทรัพย์ ก่อความรุนแรง และสังหารพลเมืองโดยไร้ข้อกล่าวหา

You’ve likely heard of a count, but after catching up on Bridgerton, you may be wondering: what in the world is a viscount? We’ve got your back. A viscount is “a nobleman next below an earl or count and next above a baron.” It’s a hereditary title that was first recorded in English in the mid to late 1300s within a peerage or nobility system. You could think of it as a “vice count,” since it’s believed to have come from the equivalent in Old French, visconte.

rake
In the world of Regency romance, a rake is not a gardening tool. It’s an insult dating back to the 1600s that means “a dissolute or immoral person, especially a man who indulges in vices or lacks sexual restraint.” It comes from rakehell, an alteration of the Middle English rakel, meaning “rash, rough, coarse, hasty.” Rakes are the “bad boys” of the Bridgerton era. Of course, on TV, that may be a part of their appeal.

Historically, countenance is related to control and the idea of keeping one’s cool, especially in polite society. Though it refers more generally to one’s facial expression today, countenance comes from the Old French contenance, or “behavior, bearing.” The Old French noun comes from the Latin noun continentia “self-control, restraint.”

In the 19th century, coming out meant something different than it does today. It was customary for young women at the time to come out, or have “a debut into society, especially a formal debut by a debutante.” This typically involved a special ball or series or balls and parties. Essentially, this debut was a signal to the community that the woman was ready for courtship and marriage.

When you hear talk of “the ton” on Bridgerton, they aren’t mispronouncing the word town. Ton means “fashionable society,” particularly high class society during the Regency era. The word comes from le bon ton, a French phrase meaning “good or elegant form or style.” Members of the ton were generally upper class, wealthy, and respected.

Regency
Bridgerton is an example of a regency romance, a genre of historical romance set during the Regency era. Regency, in this sense, means “characteristic of or relating to the Regency periods in France or the United Kingdom or to the styles of architecture, furniture, art, literature, etc, produced in them.” This time period is generally believed to fall between 1811–1820.

season
The season is a big deal to the fictional characters in Bridgerton, but they aren’t necessarily referring to winter, spring, summer, or fall. More likely, they are referring to the social season, or “a period of fashionable social events in a particular place.” The season was a time for coming out, social events, and marriages. It’s thought to have taken place from early spring until around Christmas time.

sire
Today, sire is a respectful, if a little old-fashioned, form of address. But when the word is used in Bridgerton, it’s more likely meant in the archaic sense: “to beget; procreate as the father.” Men at this time were expected to “sire an heir” to secure their lineage and place in high society.

modiste
Any lady fit for a Bridgerton-style ball must have a modiste on hand. That’s an older term for “a female maker of or dealer in women’s fashionable attire.” As you may have guessed, English speakers borrowed the word modiste from French. In the Regency era, a modiste could not only make clothes, but also advise women on what was fashionable and appropriate for various events.

courses
Even Regency-era women had to worry about Aunt Flo crashing the party. Courses is an older, fancier way of saying “menses,” or a period. In the Bridgerton time period, the presence or absence of someone’s period was essentially the only way of determining whether or not she could bear children or was pregnant, so much is made of courses by the women on the show.

high in the instep
If you wanted to drop a sick burn on someone in the 1800s, you might say they were high in the instep. The instep is “the arched upper surface of the human foot between the toes and the ankle,” and accusing someone of being high in the instep was a way of saying they’re conceited, arrogant, or haughty.

virtue
In modern times, we think of virtue as personal morals or values. Historically, the term was mostly about sex. Virtue meant “chastity; virginity”, especially in reference to women and girls. It was considered of the utmost importance for a woman to “keep her virtue” until marriage. The word entered English in the late 1100s, and it can be traced to the Latin virtūs, or “manliness.”

trousseau
Bridgerton is part romance and part historical fashion education. A trousseau is “an outfit of clothing, household linen, etc., for a bride.” The word comes from Old French trusse, literally “a little bundle.” In some instances, a trousseau may also have included jewelry and other items and been a part of a woman’s dowry. While dowries aren’t a part of modern wedding traditions, some brides still prepare a trousseau of things they intend to wear throughout their wedding festivities.

swoon
Now that your vocabulary is ready for the next season of Bridgerton, it’s time to let the swooning commence. To swoon means “to enter a state of hysterical rapture or ecstasy.” Whether you have a favorite duke, duchess, viscount, or modiste, chances are you’ll be acting out this term at least a few times when they appear on screen. Keep in mind that swoon comes from the Middle English swonen, or “to faint.” You may want to binge-watch carefully.
